Monster Egg Surprise...

Description

This is now part four of my Monster Egg story started here: [link]

After my grandpa finished measuring the egg as seen here [link] [link] our next task was to bring it inside and measure how much it weighed, because the egg felt quite heavy, and we would soon find out the reason for that...

The egg was extremely fragile at one end, and that part had cracked and some of the liquid inside had been lost when it had been in the egg box, but overall the egg weighed in at about 116 grams. After weighing it, we wanted to see how many yolks were inside that behemoth, because we occassionally got double-yolk eggs before and we wondered how many were inside this one.

But when we tipped the egg over on the cracked end, for some reason the contents inside didn't want to come out through the small hole. I stuck my finger in there, and felt something hard inside. At first, I thought it was the yolk itself, that it had solidified somehow (it has happened, I've read stories in poultry magazines), but after a while a thought struck me...that inside the giant egg was possibly another egg!! :iconmindblownplz:

I was proved to be absolutely right when we managed to widen the crack in the shell just enough for the contents to slide out into the bowl: there was a second, normal-sized egg inside along with the yolk for the giant egg! That explained why the egg felt so heavy when we held it! An egg within an egg....EGG-CEPTION!! :iconmindblownplz:x:iconover9kplz: *shot for the horrible pun*

The second egg measured at 2 1/4 inches long and 1 3/4 inches wide...in short an average-sized Rhode Island Red chicken egg.

This was truely an amazing egg story, and I've been dying to share it all with you. We've kept both eggshells as reminders of the event after emptying out the contents of the second smaller egg by piercing it on both ends to blow out the insides, and I've patched up the cracked end of the huge egg with some strong glue to strengthen it a bit. People who come to our house see the eggs on display in our china cabinet, and honestly can't believe that an egg that big came from one of our chickens!

It may be a long time or possibly never that an egg like that will show itself again, but it sure made one hell of a story. :la:
